Don’t Stop Taxpayer Funded Cell Phones.  Senator Bill Griffin of Arkansas introduced a bill to stop taxpayer-funded cell phones.  The bill’s purpose is to stop universal service support of cell phones through Lifeline.  This bill was also introduced in 2011, with no success.  Since 2008, when under President Bush, the program has doubled, in 143 million in one year, to $38 million, and again to $822 million a year.  Presently the free government phone program is costing over, $1.75 billion yearly.  The problem is this program has gotten out of hand.   Many politicians and citizens fee, Lifeline money should not subsidize the cell phone program.

It’s the Economy Stupid!

The economy has been horrible, for a lot of people!  Though the numbers for newly employed are going up, there are still 22.6 million who have been out of work, for more than a year.  Out of those 22.6 million, there are those who have a nest egg and community or family support, and then there are those who have little or nothing.

Many have reluctantly turned to the government for food, perhaps rent or mortgage, and yes free phones.  Taxpayer-funded cell phones help the needy, elderly, disabled and the poor.

Free Phone Service Help Struggling Families

Truthfully, the free government phone program is not a bad idea to help struggling Americans. Just like other government-funded programs, it helps the economy.  How does giving away free phones help the economy?  Let’s take a look.  Everything we do not only in the U.S. but the world revolves around our ability to communicate.

Taxpayer Funded Cell Phones

As mentioned in another post, the promotion of the cell phone program, by cell phone companies, have done much to make people know, they are offering phones to low-income adults.  Get your Assurance Wireless Phone, get your QLink Wireless phone, 250 minutes and talk!  You have seen the commercials on television and heard them on the radio.

The Lifeline program is not advertising this program; the phone companies are! You have to admit, these communications companies are definitely hawking their wares!  Don’t you think these companies receive benefits from driving people to their company?  I should say so!  Most cell phone owners speak a lot more than 250 minutes each month.  These companies know this as well!

They are aware that when those few minutes run out, they will be the recipient of the dollars; consumers will pay to purchase additional time.  Though I have no proof, I suspect some of the abuse of the program, is encouraged by the phone companies themselves. I don’t know what the future of the free cell phone program will be.  Only time will tell, when or if the free cell phone program will end.
