Free Government Phone Fraud & Abuse

Free government phone abuse, has gotten a lot of press.  The free cell phone program was started decades ago, to help rural poor; but not until the recent explosion of people receiving free cell phones, did you hear all the abuse!  The truth is, there is a lot of fraud and abuse associated with the program.

You mostly hear about the greedy poor, who don’t need phones, getting multiple phones and free service. You seldom hear about the grasping phone companies who are pushing the phones to everyone, so can collect $9.50 for each person who applies.    It is estimated that  two billion dollars  will be lost in the next three years unless fraud can be stopped.  These billions can be put to better use elsewhere.

Free Government Phone Abuse

The FCC, now fines phone companies who use deceptive practice to increase profits through the Lifeline program.  Also, users who misrepresent themselves to get more than one phone will be banned from the program.Today anyone who applies for a free phone must provide proof of financial eligibility, to receive a government phone.

Free is not free!  Someone has to pay for these free phones.  The FCC  adds a fee to every land line and cell phone.  These fees are collected to fund the Lifeline program.  It is Americans money that is funding the program, and to add insult to injury, being misappropriated.

Government Program Fraud

Free Government phone abuse, is not the exception!  Much like any government program, fraud and abuse can exist, when there is a possibility of gain, by either the person receiving or providing goods.  The Medicaid program is a good example, of a government program, established to help the poor being abused.

Billions upon billions of dollars are lost each year, because of dishonest doctors or clinics, seeking to defraud the government.  Over charging patient accounts, or charging Medicaid for services they do not receive, are some of the ways, the Medicaid program is abused.

The Truth about the Free Cell Phone Program

The truth is, this program does help many elderly, disabled, poor and indigent people.  Free government phone abuse, is  the fly in the ointment.  Because of  a few people, this help may be jeopardized.  Hopefully, they can streamline the free cell program, to help only those who truly need it.  To participate in the program, consumers must either have an income at or below 135% of the federal Poverty Guidelines or participate in a free cell phone program.
