Texas government cell phone providers perform a very important service to the people of that state.  According to the federal  Bureau of Labor Statistics, the state is the second largest state in the U.S.  

With a population of over, 26,059,203, it consistently ranks among the top 10 most populated.   It also has the highest number of people residing in poverty.  Almost one in five adults in Texas, live below the poverty level.  Also, one in four children lives below the poverty level.

Texas borders on Mexico,  and  experiences considerable financial hardships, as each year, thousands, come into the state illegally.   Without the help of the community and private companies coming together, many disadvantaged residents will continue to struggle.  Something as small as an inexpensive phone and minutes can make a big difference to a family.

Lifeline Assistance Helps Disadvantaged Residents

Lifeline Assistance offers phones to low-income households through a government subsidized phone.  By ensuring people have greater access to phones. It is hoped that they can be used in emergencies, contacting potential employers, and to make other essential calls.

There are many cellular providers participating in the lifeline program in the Lone Star State.  This program also helps those who use landline service.  Each provider has unique plan options for additional  minutes, refill options and often different geographical coverage.  Research all  options available to you in order to find the plan that fits your needs.

Are you Eligible?

Once you have chosen your provider simply, fill out their form online, or by  mail to apply. You are eligible for the Lifeline program, if you receive benefits from any of these programs:

  • National School Lunch (free program only)
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance / Section 8
  • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP)
  • Medicaid
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
  • Tribally-Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
  • Benefits related to residence on tribal lands

You Also Qualify If:

You may also qualify if your total household income is at or lower than 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. If you receive assistance from any of the government agencies listed above, you must send in documents.

If you are currently enrolled in that benefits assistance program.  If you are working but financially eligible, you must provide documentation of your financial status, with W-2’s, payroll stubs.

If you are approved for the lifeline free cell phone program you will have to use the service at least once every 60 days.  Prove you are still eligible for the program must be verified every year. 

If you become ineligible, because your financial standing has improved, you must immediately inform your provider or can be subject to penalties. It is important to note that each household can only benefit from only one lifeline  cell phone.
